Everything we know about Jay Slater's funeral including why it's taken so long (2024)

Loved ones are set to say goodbye to teenager Jay Slater at his funeral this Saturday, August 10.

Jay's family found themselves thrust into the public eye after the 19-year-old disappeared whilst on holiday in Tenerife. The young apprentice bricklayer vanished after attempting to walk ten hours back to his accommodation after missing a bus.

After a month of searching the island, a fingerprint match confirmed a deceased body found in the Rural de Teno park as Jay's on July 15. A post mortem revealed the cause of death to be extensive head injuries as a result of Jay falling from a great height.

Details of the Funeral

Jay's family announced the funeral will take place on Saturday, August 10, at Accrington Cemetery Chapel in Lancashire. Located on Burnley Road, Accrington Cemetery and is the largest and oldest cemetery in Lancashire's Hyndburn, dating back to 1864.

Jay's mother has requested that only family flowers are brought to the funeral, according to The Mirror. Instead, grieving members of the public are asked to pay respects by bringing a single rose.

Jay's family have also asked that attendees to the funeral wear blue, instead of the traditional black, in Jay's memory.

Another Fundraiser

Alongside the announcement of the funeral, Jay's mother shared a new fundraiser in Jay's memory. The website ' Remembering Jay' has been set up to raise money for LBT Global.

LBT Global describe their services on their website, writing: "Providing families with information, liaison, advice and support throughout a missing person's case overseas remains a core part of our operations. Every year we reunite many families with the loved one they feared they may never see again."

The overseas crisis support charity was reported to play an essential part in aiding Jay's family through the investigation of his disappearance. The website reads: "This fundraiser is in memory of Jay Slater, so friends and family can honour his memory with a gift to LBT Global.

"Jay's family have asked for donations in memory of Jay to LBT Global, the charity that has helped, and continues to help, them through the tragic loss of Jay in Tenerife. All donations will go straight to supporting families in similar situations.

"Thank you so much for supporting our work in memory of Jay."

Delays to Jay's burial

Jay's funeral is occurring seven weeks after his disappearance, and nearly four weeks after his body was recovered. This is due to various factors, including the following due processes.

The length of time to discover the deceased's body has been a point of contention since the investigation began. After the teen's disappearance was reported, an extensive search by the Spanish Civil Guard commenced, involving drones, sniffer dogs, and helicopters.

Many people back home took to the internet to play armchair detective, with conspiracy theories and rumours flying wildly. By June 30, the search party was announced as discontinued, to public disdain.

The Civil Guard later claimed that discreet searches continued in order to deter curious onlookers, amongst the media frenzy surrounding the case. The body was then found amongst the mountainous terrain around Masca, in an area that had previously been searched.

The Guardia Civil have declined to answer questions about whether they had "missed" the body in previous days of searching the area, telling BBC journalists: "We don't give details of the investigation".

Jay's heartbroken parents then had to wait until their son's body could be repatriated back to the UK before funeral proceedings could begin.

Scammers

Now, Jay's parents are having to contend with scammers making false claims about the teenager's funeral. Trolls have planned fake funeral "live streams" in a bid to con well-wishers into donating cash.

LBT Global boss, Matthew Searle, has confirmed that there will be no live stream, saying this is an elaborate scam. The charity's chief executive said: "We are inundated with reports of these scams, and as fast as we can get the platforms to remove them, more appear.

"To be completely clear there is no live stream of Jay's funeral, and anyone claiming to offer one is a scam. As much as being hurtful and deeply disrespectful, this is taking vital donations away from a small charity.

"We ask anyone seeing one of these pages to report it to the platform. Please don't follow them or send them money. It is so typical of the vile trolling this family has received for them to target something so special as a funeral."
